Wozniacki finally wins big, but can a Grand Slam follow?

Winning the WTA Finals was the biggest result of Caroline Wozniacki’s career. Although she has spent much of her career at the top of woman’s tennis, a Grand Slam title has always eluded her. Perhaps this is the result which changes everything. By Jade du Preez

Whether you know of Caroline Wozniacki for her illustrious and long career or just her recent win at the WTA Finals, one thing is for sure – her path to fame has not been an easy one.

With constant struggles in maintaining form and with injuries, Wozniacki has battled back after falling out of the Top 10 in 2015, but crucially, she is one of very few women’s players who has captured the coveted Number 1 spot, but without winning a Grand Slam title. Her closest attempts were two US Open finals in 2009 and 2014, and a semi-final appearance at the 2011 Australian Open.

Even though she isn’t held to the esteem of players like Ana Ivanovic, a Grand Slam champion who only held the Number 1 spot for 12 weeks, Wozniacki has ticked off some huge milestones. She has finished year-end Number 1 twice, holding the spot for 67 weeks in total, and ranks 6th in the career prize money leaderboard. She’s also won 27 pro titles since her career began in 2005, holding the record for the most titles won in 2010 and 2011. The Dane is also the only Scandinavian woman to hold the Number 1 spot.

Unfortunately, it’s her struggle to maintain form, and her battles with injury, that have stopped her reaching her potential to be a Grand Slam champion. She currently sits at the Number 3 spot in the rankings, and it’s safe to say that her reputation for inconsistency could mean we see another spike in her game in a few years time, much like this past 2017 season, where she has won two titles and reached six other finals.

The past year does promise some stellar tennis and some unforeseen wins. Her victories over Elina Svitolina, Simona Halep, Karolína Plišková and Venus Williams at the WTA Finals were unpredictable, and that’s what makes tennis so interesting. We want to see the underdog win, and sometime when she’s down on her luck, that underdog is Caroline Wozniacki.
